About AskAnywhere

The following sections provide a brief overview of the AskAnywhere survey system, describe the system and hardware requirements necessary to install and run it, and provide information about known bugs.

Overview

AskAnywhere is a platform-neutral, multilingual, enterprise-class survey system. With its suite of Java programs, AskAnywhere gives you the power to quickly create large, complex surveys capable of seamless integration with backend database systems. It helps you to create questionnaires in many languages while using most current Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or Unix desktop computers.

The AskAnywhere survey system is composed of the AskAnywhere Editor and the AskAnywhere server component. The AskAnywhere Editor enables you to create questionnaires in many languages. The AskAnywhere server component, of which the AskAnywhere Administrator is a part, consists of an integrated set of Java programs which handle everything from questionnaire administration, database connections, results data storage and display, and other survey administration tasks.

Notes:

System Requirements

The AskAnywhere survey system requires a dedicated server running certain software, including a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and Java servlet container. The minimum system requirements for AskAnywhere are mainly determined by the requirements of the JVM and the Java servlet container. To install and use AskAnywhere, we recommend you review the system requirements for the JVM and Java servlet container, but, at minimum, we recommend the following system components.

Operating Systems

The AskAnywhere survey system is a multi-platform program that runs on any Java 2-compliant computing environment. Most mainframe, server, and desktop operating systems can host AskAnywhere including:

  • Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP
  • Macintosh OSX
  • Linux
  • Solaris
  • OS/2

Java Operating System

The AskAnywhere survey system can be successfully installed and run on any server that is capable of installing and running, at minimum, a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) 1.4 (or JVM 1.3 for OSX). Because AskAnywhere is written in Java, it requires a JVM on which to run.

Java Servlet Container

The AskAnywhere server component is a web application (i.e., a set of Java servlets) that requires a Java servlet container to run.

Hardware Requirements

While the AskAnywhere Editor runs on most machines on which you can install and run a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), we recommend, at minimum, the following hardware components:

  • 32 MB RAM
  • 8 MB of available hard-disk space
  • 200 MHz or higher processor

While the AskAnywhere server component runs on most machines on which you can install and run a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and Tomcat, we recommend, at minimum, the following hardware components.

  • 32 MB RAM
  • 64 MB of available hard-disk space
  • 200 MHz or higher processor

For more information about hardware requirements, refer to Sun Microsystems' and Jakarta's web sites for the JVM and Tomcat requirements, respectively.

Known Bugs

If you are using the ATI Rage 128 Pro 5.0.0.86 graphics driver dated 1/14/2000, do not launch AskAnywhere more than once at the same time. Doing so may cause unexpected results including, but not limited to, AskAnywhere shutting down unexpectedly under certain circumstances.
