Setting up Access

The Access page enables you to set up access permissions for the AskAnywhere Administrator.  It enables you to add, edit, and/or delete users and IP addresses that have permission to access the AskAnywhere Administrator.

Adding Users

To add users with access permission, complete the following steps.

  1. Select the Access tab.
  2. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  3. Select Add User.
  4. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  5. Enter the desired user name (alphanumeric) and password (alphanumeric), re-type the password to verify it, select the Administrative User checkbox if desired for this user, and select Save.  To clear all the values on the screen, select Reset.

Note:  Any user defined as an administrative user will have access to all AskAnywhere Administrator functions.  Any user not defined as an administrative user will have access only to the Projects and Data tabs.

Caution:  Make sure that your first user is defined as an administrative user because after you set up your first user, the "manager" user name and "askanywhere" password are no longer valid.  In addition, be certain that you always maintain at least one administrative user or you will no longer have access to the administrative functions.

Note:  If at anytime you lose your administrative user access (e.g., forgotten password, data loss), you can revert to the "manager" user name and "askanywhere" password in one of two ways.

    • Delete the askanywhere.cfg file.  Caution:  This will delete all settings in the AskAnywhere Administrator.
    • Edit the askanywhere.cfg file (using a plain text editor) by deleting all of the <user …/> tags.  Then restart AskAnywhere and/or Tomcat.

Adding IP Addresses

Click here to view a detailed graphic. In order to limit the machines that have access to the AskAnywhere Administrator, enter the IP address(es) to which you want to grant access in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field and select Save.

  • To grant access to a single machine, enter that machine’s IP address in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field.  (For example, to enable access for the computer with an IP address of 1.1.1.1, enter 1.1.1.1.)
  • To grant access to several machines with similar IP addresses, enter the common part of the IP address in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field.  (For example, to enable access to any machine with an IP address that begins with 1.1.1, enter 1.1.1.)
  • To grant access to several machines with different IP addresses, enter the IP address of the first machine and press Enter; enter the next IP address and press Enter; continue until you are done entering all the desired IP addresses.

Caution:  Entering data in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field restricts remote access to the AskAnywhere Administrator.  If at a later date, you want to access the AskAnywhere Administrator from a new IP address (e.g., while you are traveling), you must first add the new IP address from an IP address with access permission.
