Adding Answers

Adding Fixed-choice Answers | Adding Open-ended Answers | Creating Variable Names and Labels

With the AskAnywhere Editor, you can provide fixed-choice answers and open-ended answers for your respondents.

  • Fixed-choice answers give respondents a set group of answers from which to select their responses (e.g., select your favorite vegetable from the following list, select your favorite five vegetables from the following list).
  • Open-ended answers give respondents the ability to enter text, numbers, and/or other characters for their responses (e.g., enter your age in years, enter the name of your favorite vegetable).

Adding Fixed-choice Answers

To add a fixed-choice answer to a questionnaire page, complete the following steps.

  1. Access the fixed-choice Answer Editing window in one of the following ways.
Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • From the main toolbar, select the Add Answer to Page button.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.

    • From the Add menu, select Add Answer to Page (Fixed Choice).
  2. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  4. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  5. In the Use field of the Items section, enter the number of response items you want to use for this response set. For example, if you want to list 10 vegetables from which respondents may select their favorite(s), you should enter 10 in this field. Use the arrows on either side of the field to increase or decrease the current number. The default value is 1.
  6. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  7. Select or deselect the Random checkbox in the Items section to indicate whether you want the response items to appear in random order. A check in this field indicates that these response items will appear to respondents in random order; no check in this field indicates that these response items will appear to respondents in the order listed (not in random order). The default is unchecked.
  8. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  9. In the Min field of the Items section, enter the minimum number of response items a respondent must select when responding. In the Max field of the Items section, enter the maximum number of response items a respondent may select when responding. For example, if you want respondents to select at least one favorite vegetable but no more than five, you should enter a 1 in the Min field and a 5 in the Max field. Use the arrows on either side of the fields to increase or decrease the current number. The default values are each 1.

The default is unchecked.

Select graphic to view a larger image. If you select Don't Save Answer, a dialogue window opens prompting you to confirm that selection. To confirm the selection, select Yes. To cancel the selection, select No.

Note: Since the data for temporary answer sets are stored in memory until the respondent closes the questionnaire (even though the data are not written to a permanent data file), you can use these data in skip and filter instructions as well as calculations and fills for other questions and answer sets.

  10. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  11. In the Type field, enter the desired type of field. To do this, select the first row under the Type heading. Then, from the Type pull-down menu select the type of field you want this item to be or select Ctrl + the corresponding key(s) (e.g., Ctrl + 1 for Label) for the desired type.
    • The Label option (used in conjunction with any of the following Type options) provides the ability to place labels throughout a response set in order to help guide the respondent. For example, if you are going to ask for a person's age and name on a questionnaire page, you may want to provide a label next to the space for age and another next to the space where you want respondents to enter their name. For more information, refer to Creating Integer and Real Number Answer Items and Creating Other Numeric Answer Items.
    • The Text option provides an open-ended answer item that enables respondents to optionally enter up to 10,000 text, numeric, and/or special characters to define their response. (For this option, the system does not require respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) This is the default option for the Type field.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Text-Variable option provides an open-ended answer item that enables respondents to optionally enter up to a specified number of text, numeric, and/or special characters to define their response. (For this option, the system does not require respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter a maximum number of characters for respondents' answers. For example, you might want to limit responses to 30 characters if you are asking for the respondent's name.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Integer option provides an open-ended answer item that requires respondents to enter integers (i.e., positive and negative whole numbers) to define their response. (For this option, the system requires respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the minimum and maximum integers that respondents may enter. For example, you might want to limit responses to between 18 and 120 if you are asking for the respondent's age. For more information, refer to Integer Answer Items.
    • The Integer Open option provides an open-ended answer item that enables respondents to optionally enter integers (i.e., positive and negative whole numbers) to define their response. (For this option, the system does not require respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the Integer Limits window opens prompting you to enter the minimum and maximum integers that respondents may enter. For example, you might want to limit responses to between 18 and 120 if you are asking for the respondent's age. For more information, refer to Integer Answer Items.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Analog option provides an open-ended answer item that enables respondents to optionally respond to a question by using graphical input (e.g., sliding a scroll bar up and down or side to side) to define their response. (For this option, the system does not require respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire because the system automatically defaults to the value in the middle of the specified limits.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the minimum and maximum integer limit for the analog scale. For example, you might want to limit the analog scale to between 1 and 10 if you are asking the respondent to rate the taste of a certain product. For more information, refer to Analog Rating Scales.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Real option provides an open-ended answer item that requires respondents to enter real numbers (i.e., positive and negative numbers with or without decimals) to define their response. (For this option, the system requires respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the minimum and maximum real numbers that respondents may enter. For example, you might want to limit responses to between 0.0 and 25.99 (i.e., $0 - $25.99) if you are asking for the average amount of money the respondent spends per day on soft drinks. For more information, refer to Real Number Answer Items.
    • The Real Open option provides an open-ended answer item that enables respondents to optionally enter real numbers (i.e., positive and negative numbers with or without decimals) to define their response. (For this option, the system does not require respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the Real Limits window opens prompting you to enter a minimum and maximum real number that respondents may enter. For example, you might want to limit responses to between 0.0 and 25.99 (i.e., $0 - $25.99) if you are asking for the average amount of money the respondent spends per day on soft drinks. For more information, refer to Real Number Answer Items.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Constant Sum option (used in conjunction with the Integer and Integer Open options) provides the ability to create answer sets that require respondents to respond to various answer items with integers that add up to a specified value. (For this option, the system requires respondents to respond with integers that add up to the specified value before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the value to which all responses must total. For example, you may ask, "In an average week, approximately what percentage of the time do you drink the following soft drinks?" In this example, you would want all the responses to add up to 100 (i.e., 100%). For more information, refer to Fixed Sum Scale Items. Note: For any one answer set, you should not use this option with the Sum Less and/or Sum Greater option.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Sum Less option (used in conjunction with the Integer and Integer Open options) provides the ability to create answer sets that require respondents to respond to various answer items with integers that add up to less than a specified value. (For this option, the system requires respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the value that the sum of all responses must remain below. For example, you may ask, "In an average week, approximately how many days do you drink soft drinks?" In this example, you would want all the responses to add up to less than 8 (i.e., 0 - 7 days). For more information, refer to Fixed Sum Scale Items. Note: For any one answer set, you should not use this option with the Constant Sum option.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • The Sum Greater option (used in conjunction with the Integer and Integer Open options) provides the ability to create answer sets that require respondents to respond to various answer items with integers that add up to more than a specified value. (For this option, the system requires respondents to respond before proceeding to the next question in the questionnaire.) When you select this option, the following window opens prompting you to enter the value that the sum of all responses must exceed. For example, you may ask, "How many of each make of car have you owned?" In this example, you would want all the responses to add up to more than 0 (zero) assuming that you have previously determined that the respondent has owned at least one car. For more information, refer to Fixed Sum Scale Items. Note: For any one answer set, you should not use this option with the Constant Sum option.
  12. Depending on the option chosen for the Type field, the value in the Item Text field varies.
    • For Label types, enter the desired text for the label (e.g., Name, Age) in the Item Text field.
    • For Text and Text-Variable types, you should leave the Item Text field blank unless you want to have something pre-entered in that answer item. Note: Any value remaining in the field when the respondent completes the questionnaire will be saved as data (whether that data was pre-entered by the creator, entered by the respondent, or a combination).
    • For Integer and Integer Open types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the values you entered in the Integer Limit window (e.g., 18 <= I <= 120).
    • For Analog types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the values you entered in the Analog Limit window (e.g., 1 <= A <= 10).
    • For Real and Real Open types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the values you entered in the Real Limit window (e.g., 0.0 <= R <= 25.99).
    • For Constant Sum types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the value you entered in the Sum Equals To window (e.g., Sum = 100).
    • For Sum Less types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the value you entered in the Sum Less Than window (e.g., Sum < 8).
    • For Sum Greater types, the system automatically enters an equation in the Item Text field representing the value you entered in the Sum Greater Than window (e.g., Sum > 0).
  13. To undo the last unsaved changes you made, select Cancel. To save the current response set, select Apply. To save the current response set and close the Answer Editing window, select Ok.
  14. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  15. Once you save the current response set and close the Answer Editing window, the Main Program window opens with the response set enclosed in a text frame.

Creating Variable Names and Labels

You can give each set of answers both a variable name and label. To create a variable name and/or label for a set of answers, type the text for the variable and/or label in the spaces provided at the top of the Answer Editing window.

Select graphic to view a larger image.Note: Variable names must be unique; you cannot use the same variable name for more than one set of answers. For example, if you name the variables (answers) for question 1 in your survey "VAR1", then none of the other variables (answers) to subsequent questions can be named "VAR1".

Note: We suggest that you enter variable names and labels for each set of answers when you create those answers. Although this information does not appear on the actual survey, it may be quite valuable later, in analyzing your data.
