The following sections provide information about launching the AskAnywhere Editor, getting familiar with the various AskAnywhere Editor windows, selecting the display language, determining what version of the AskAnywhere Editor you are using, updating the AskAnywhere Editor, and getting familiar with the various keyboard shortcuts you can use within the editor.

Launching the AskAnywhere Editor

AskAnywhere Editor IconTo start the AskAnywhere Editor, locate the AskAnywhere Editor application on your hard drive and double click on the corresponding icon. Note: If you have placed a shortcut to the AskAnywhere Editor on your desktop, you may also double click on that shortcut.

Becoming Familiar with the AskAnywhere Editor

Main Program Window | Question Editing Window | Answer Editing Window

The AskAnywhere Editor functions like many common desktop publishing programs through buttons, toolbars, pull-down menus, and pop-up windows. When using the AskAnywhere Editor, you work with a variety of pop-up windows while the AskAnywhere Editor Main Program window remains open in the background.

Main Program Window

The following figure details the components of the main AskAnywhere Editor program window. Each callout number corresponds to a numbered description in the list following the graphic.

  1. File Pull-down Menu -- enables you to open and close new and existing questionnaires; save questionnaires, pages, and projects; insert files; import and export questionnaires; and exit the AskAnywhere Editor. For more information, refer to Opening and Closing Questionnaires; Saving and Testing Questionnaires; Managing Questionnaire Elements and Pages; and Importing and Exporting Questionnaires.

  3. Edit Pull-down Menu -- enables you to undo and redo changes; cut, copy, paste, delete, and select items; horizontally center items; position and size answers; as well as find text and answers within a questionnaire.   5. Add Pull-down Menu -- enables you to add questions, answers, multimedia elements, and library items to a questionnaire as well as save new and changed library items within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Questions; Working with Answers; Working with Multimedia Elements; and Working with Library Items.

  7. Utilities Pull-down Menu -- enables you to add, delete, and move pages; edit questions, answers, and multimedia frames; create skip and filter instructions; randomize the order of pages; collect data regarding how much time respondents spend on specific pages; display item numbers; change the appearance of items; and make global changes to items within a questionnaire. This menu also enables you to select the language in which respondents will view a questionnaire as well as test a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Managing Questionnaire Elements and Pages; Creating Skip and Filter Instructions; Utilities and Edit Functions; Formatting Text and Page Appearance; and Saving and Testing Questionnaires.

  9. Language Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the language in which the toolbar icons, window titles, warning dialogs, and buttons display in the AskAnywhere Editor. For more information, refer to Selecting the Display Language.

  11. About Pull-down Menu -- enables you to determine the version of the AskAnywhere Editor you are using, determine whether you are using the most current version of the software, and install updates to the software (if available). For more information, refer to Obtaining Version Information and Updating the AskAnywhere Editor.
  12. Add Question to Page Button -- enables you to add a question to a page within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Questions.
  13. Add Answer to Page Button -- enables you to add a fixed-choice or open-ended answer to a page within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Answers.
  14. Add Multimedia to Page Button -- enables you to add multimedia elements (such as GIF and JPG graphic files, and AU audio files) to a page within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Multimedia Elements.
  15. Page Number Indicator Field -- identifies the number of the page in a questionnaire that you are viewing. You can also use this indicator to move to another page in a questionnaire. To move to another page, click and hold on the page number and drag the indicator to the desired page number.
  16. Page Navigation Arrows -- enable you to scroll through the pages in a questionnaire. Selecting the left-hand arrow takes you to the previous page in a questionnaire; selecting the right-hand arrow takes you to the next page in a questionnaire. From the first page of a questionnaire, you can go to the last page by using the left-hand arrow; from the last page of a questionnaire, you can go to the first page by using the right-hand arrow.
  17. Append Blank Page Button -- enables you to add a blank page to the end of a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Managing Questionnaire Elements and Pages.
  18. Go To Online Manual Button -- enables you to access the online documentation for the AskAnywhere survey system.

Question Editing Window

The Question Editing window enables you to create, format, and customize questions within a questionnaire. You can access the Question Editing window in one of the following ways:

  • From the Main Program window, select the Add Question to Page button.
  • From the Add menu on the Main Program window, select Add Question to Page.

  1. Edit Pull-down Menu -- enables you to undo and redo changes; cut, copy, paste, and select items; and find text within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Questions and Utilities and Edit Functions.
  2. Tag Pull-down Menu

  3. Tag Pull-down Menu -- enables you to add adaptive tags to a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Creating Adaptive Questionnaires.
  4. Block Field -- identifies the number of the question block on the corresponding questionnaire page with which you are currently working.

    Of Field -- identifies the total number of question blocks on the corresponding questionnaire page with which you are currently working.

  5. On Page Field -- identifies the number of the page in the questionnaire with which you are currently working.

    Of Field -- identifies the total number of pages in the questionnaire with which you are currently working.

  6. Page Navigation Arrows -- enable you to scroll through the questions in a questionnaire. Selecting the left-hand arrow takes you to the previous question in a questionnaire; selecting the right-hand arrow takes you to the next question in a questionnaire. From the first question of a questionnaire, you can go to the last question by using the left-hand arrow; from the last question of a questionnaire, you can go to the first question by using the right-hand arrow.
  7. Show Page Button -- enables you to display the corresponding questionnaire page in the Main Program window for the question with which you are currently working.
  8. Font Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the font in which to display the question with which you are currently working.
  9. Size Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the font size in which to display the question with which you are currently working.
  10. Color Button -- enables you to select the font color in which to display the question with which you are currently working.
  11. B Check Box -- enables you to select whether to bold the question text with which you are currently working.
  12. I Check Box -- enables you to select whether to italicize the question text with which you are currently working.
  13. Justification Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select whether to right, center, or left justify the question text with which you are currently working.
  14. Question Text Field -- enables you to specify the text you want associated with the question with which you are currently working.
  15. Cancel Button -- enables you to cancel the changes made to a question since the last time it was saved.
  16. Apply Button -- enables you to save the changes made to a question since the last time it was saved.
  17. Ok Button -- enables you to save the changes made to a question since the last time it was saved, close the Question Editing window, and return to the Main Program window.

Answer Editing Window

The Answer Editing window enables you to create, format, and customize answers within a questionnaire. You can access the Answer Editing window in one of the following ways:

  • To open a fixed-choice Answer Editing window,
    • from the Main Program window, select the Add Answer to Page button; or
    • from the Add menu on the Main Program window, select Add Answer to Page (Fixed-choice).
  • To open an open-ended Answer Editing window,
    • from the Main Program window, hold down the CTRL key and select the Add Question to Page button; or
    • from the Add menu on the Main Program window, select Add Question to Page (Open-ended).

The following figure details the components of the top of the Answer Editing window. This section of the Answer Editing window is the same for both fixed-choice and open-ended Answer Editing windows. Each callout number corresponds to a numbered description in the list following the graphic.

Answer Editing Window Details (Top)

  1. Answer Field -- identifies the answer on the corresponding questionnaire page with which you are currently working.
  2. Block Field -- identifies the number of the answer block on the corresponding questionnaire page with which you are currently working.

    Of Field -- identifies the total number of answer blocks on the corresponding questionnaire page with which you are currently working.

  3. On Page Field -- identifies the number of the page in the questionnaire with which you are currently working.

    Of Field -- identifies the total number of pages in the questionnaire with which you are currently working.

  4. Page Navigation Arrows -- enable you to scroll through the answers in a questionnaire. Selecting the left-hand arrow takes you to the previous answer in a questionnaire; selecting the right-hand arrow takes you to the next answer in a questionnaire. From the first answer of a questionnaire, you can go to the last answer by using the left-hand arrow; from the last answer of a questionnaire, you can go to the first answer by using the right-hand arrow.
  5. Show Page Button -- enables you to display the corresponding questionnaire page in the Main Program window for the answer with which you are currently working.
  6. Skip Instructions Button -- enables you to display the corresponding Skip/Filter Instructions page for the answer with which you are currently working. For more information, refer to Creating Skip and Filter Instructions.
  7. Variable Name Field -- enables you to uniquely identify the answer in the questionnaire with which you are currently working. For more information, refer to Creating Variable Names and Labels.
  8. Variable Label Field -- enables you to uniquely identify the answer in the questionnaire with which you are currently working. This label is used for data analysis purposes only. For more information, refer to Creating Variable Names and Labels.
  9. Font Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the font in which to display the answer with which you are currently working.
  10. Size Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the font size in which to display the answer with which you are currently working.
  11. Color Button -- enables you to select the font color in which to display the answer with which you are currently working.
  12. B Check Box -- enables you to select whether to bold the answer text with which you are currently working.
  13. I Check Box -- enables you to select whether to italicize the answer text with which you are currently working.
  14. Entire Set Check Box -- enables you to specify whether you want the font, size, color, bold, and italic selections to apply to the entire answer set or just the selected answer items. To apply the font, size, color, bold, and italic selections to the entire answer set, select this box (i.e., place a check mark in this box) and then make your font, size, color, bold, and italic selections. If you select this box after you make your font, size, color, bold, and italic selections, those selections will not be applied to the entire answer set.

Fixed-choice Answer Editing Window

The following figure details the components of the bottom of the fixed-choice Answer Editing window. This section of the fixed-choice Answer Editing window differs from the open-ended Answer Editing window. Each callout number corresponds to a numbered description in the list following the graphic.

Fixed-choice Answer Editing Window

  1. Use Field -- enables you to specify how many answer items you want in the answer set with which you are currently working. Use the arrows on either side of the field to increase or decrease the current number.
  2. Random Check Box -- enables you to specify whether you want the response items to appear in random order. A check in this field indicates that you want the response items to appear in random order; no check in this field indicates that you want the response items to appear in the order listed, not random order.
  3. Min Field -- enables you to specify the minimum number of answer items a respondent must select when responding. Use the arrows on either side of the field to increase or decrease the current number.
  4. Max Field -- enables you to specify the maximum number of answer items a respondent may select when responding. Use the arrows on either side of the field to increase or decrease the current number.

  6. Button Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the appearance of the answer buttons for the answer with which you are currently working.

  8. Answer Type Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the desired answer type for the answer with which you are currently working. For more information about answer types, refer to Creating Questions with Specific Answer Types.
  9. Don't Save Answer Check Box -- enables you to specify whether you want the data from the answer set with which you are currently working saved when a respondent takes the survey. A check in this field indicates that you do not want the data from this answer set saved; no check in this field indicates that you do want the data from this answer set saved.

  11. Edit Pull-down Menu -- enables you to undo changes; cut, copy and paste items; insert and delete items; and find text within a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Working with Answers and Utilities and Edit Functions.

  13. Mutually Exclusive Pull-down Menu -- enables you to specify answer items as mutually exclusive of other answer items. For more information, refer to Creating Questions with Specific Answer Types.
  14. Tag Pull-down Menu

  15. Tag Pull-down Menu -- enables you to add adaptive tags to a questionnaire. For more information, refer to Creating Adaptive Questionnaires.
  16. Item Text Field -- enables you to specify the text you want associated with the answer item with which you are currently working.
  17. Value Field -- enables you to specify the value you want associated with the answer item with which you are currently working.
  18. Cancel Button -- enables you to cancel the changes made to an answer since the last time it was saved.
  19. Apply Button -- enables you to save the changes made to an answer since the last time it was saved.
  20. Ok Button -- enables you to save the changes made to an answer since the last time it was saved, close the Answer Editing window, and return to the Main Program window.

Open-ended Answer Editing Window

The following figure details the components of the bottom of the open-ended Answer Editing window. This section of the open-ended Answer Editing window differs from the fixed-choice Answer Editing window. Each callout number corresponds to a numbered description in the list following the graphic.

Open-ended Answer Editing Window

  1. Use Field -- enables you to specify how many answer items you want in the answer set with which you are currently working. Use the arrows on either side of the field to increase or decrease the current number.
  2. Rank Field -- enables you to specify whether you want to create an integer or integer open answer set that is used to rank respondent's answers (e.g., 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of car brands). If you select this option, respondents must enter a unique integer for each answer item within the answer set with which you are currently working. A check in this field indicates that answer items must each contain a unique numeric value; no check in this field indicates that answer items can contain the same numeric value.
  3. Don't Save Answer Check Box -- enables you to specify whether you want the data from the answer set with which you are currently working saved when a respondent takes the survey. A check in this field indicates that you do not want the data from this answer set saved; no check in this field indicates that you do want the data from this answer set saved.

  5. Type Pull-down Menu -- enables you to select the desired answer type for the answer with which you are currently working. For more information, refer to Creating Questions with Specific Answer Types.

  14. Ok Button -- enables you to save the changes made to an answer since the last time it was saved, close the Answer Editing window, and return to the Main Program window.

Selecting the Display Language

Select graphic to view a larger image.To select the display language in which the toolbar icons, window titles, warning dialogs, and buttons in the AskAnywhere Editor display, select the desired language from the Language pull-down menu. The default, display language for the AskAnywhere Editor is English.

Notes:

  • Some language characters (e.g., Chinese and Japanese) may appear as square boxes if you do not have that language installed on your computer.
  • You must select the display language before creating a new questionnaire. Once you have started creating a new questionnaire, this option is no longer active.

Obtaining Version Information

To determine the version of the AskAnywhere Editor you are using, complete the following steps.

  1. From the About pull-down menu, select AskAnywhere®.
  2. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  3. On the subsequent window, the Version heading identifies the current version number of the AskAnywhere Editor; the OS.Name heading identifies the operating system of your computer; and the JAVA.Vendor and JAVA.Version headings, respectively, identify the manufacturer and version of the JVM running on your computer.

    Note: This window also appears briefly each time you start the AskAnywhere Editor.

Updating the AskAnywhere Editor

Periodically, Senecio Software provides updates to the AskAnywhere Editor. To determine whether you are using the most current version of the software and to install an update (if available), complete the following steps.

  1. From the About pull-down menu, select Software Update.
  2. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  3. To check for an updated version of the AskAnywhere Editor, select Yes. To cancel the check for an updated version and return to the AskAnywhere Editor, select No.
  4. After you have selected Yes, one of two windows appears.

    • If your version of the AskAnywhere Editor is the most recent one available, a window appears indicating that there is no updated version available at this time. To return to the AskAnywhere Editor, select OK. You may recheck for future updates at any time.

    • If your version of the AskAnywhere Editor is not the most recent one available, a window appears indicating that there is an updated version available and asking whether you would like to download it. To proceed with the download, select Yes. To cancel the download and return to the AskAnywhere Editor, select No.

  6. If you select Yes, a window briefly appears showing the progress of the download. Click here to view a larger graphic.When the download is complete, another window appears verifying that the download is complete. To proceed with the install, select Yes. To cancel the install and return to the AskAnywhere Editor, select No.
  7. After you have selected Yes, the AskAnywhere Editor closes and then reopens. (This may take a few moments.) You now have the most current version of the AskAnywhere Editor available for your use.

Keyboard Shortcuts

The following table lists keyboard shortcuts you can use to perform various functions within the AskAnywhere Editor.

File New Ctrl + N + N Opens a new questionnaire.
File Open Ctrl + O + O Opens an existing questionnaire.
File Close Ctrl + W + W Closes the open questionnaire.
File Save Ctrl + S + S Saves the open questionnaire.
File Exit Ctrl + E + E Closes the open questionnaire and exits the AskAnywhere Editor.
Edit Functions
Undo Ctrl + Z + Z Undoes the most recently performed action (e.g., Undo Location, Undo Size, Undo Cut, Undo Edit). As you use this function, the system walks you back through (up to) the last 20 actions performed.
Redo Ctrl + Shift + Z + Shift + Z Redoes the most recently performed action (e.g, Redo Location, Redo Size, Redo Cut, Redo Edit). As you use this function, the system walks you back through (up to) the last 20 actions performed.
Cut Ctrl + X + X Cuts the selected text or frames.
Copy Ctrl + C + C Copies the selected text or frames.
Paste Ctrl + V + V Pastes the cut or copied items.
Insert Items Ctrl + I + I From the Answer Editing window, inserts an answer item before the selected answer item.
Delete Ctrl + D + D Deletes the selected items.
Select All Ctrl + A + A Selects all the frames on a page.
Center Horizontally Ctrl + H + H Centers the selected frames horizontally on a page.
Location/Size (Answer) Ctrl + L + L Opens the Location/Size window.
Find Ctrl + F + F Finds the specified text.
Find Next Ctrl + G + G Finds the next item containing the specified text.
Find Answer Ctrl + Shift + A + Shift + A Finds the specified answer set.
Add Functions
Save Items to Library Ctrl + Shift + L + Shift + L Saves the selected question, answer, or multimedia item to the library.
Utilities Functions
Add Next Page Ctrl + M + M Adds a new, blank page to the end of the questionnaire.
Question Editing Ctrl + 1 + 1 From the main program window, opens the Question Editing window.
Answer Editing Ctrl + 2 + 2 From the main program window, opens the Answer Editing window.
Multimedia Editing Ctrl + 3 + 3 From the main program window, opens the Multimedia Editing window.
Skip/Filter Instructions Ctrl + K + K Opens the Skip/Filter Instructions window.
Randomize Pages Ctrl +R + R Opens the Randomize Pages window.
Timing Pages Ctrl + T + T Opens the Timing Pages window.
Show Item Number Ctrl + I + I From the main program window, displays the item numbers on all questionnaire element frames.
Test Ctrl + B + B Tests the questionnaire.
Utilities + Snap Functions
No Snap Ctrl + Shift + 1 + Shift + 1 Sets Snap to 0.
Snap 2 Pixels Ctrl + Shift + 2 + Shift + 2 Sets Snap to 2 pixels.
Snap 3 Pixels Ctrl + Shift + 3 + Shift + 3 Sets Snap to 3 pixels.
Snap 4 Pixels Ctrl + Shift + 4 + Shift + 4 Sets Snap to 4 pixels.
Snap 5 Pixels Ctrl + Shift + 5 + Shift + 5 Sets Snap to 5 pixels.

Answer Item Type Functions
Label Type Ctrl + 1 + 1 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Label type to an answer item.
Text Type Ctrl + 2 + 2 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Text type to an answer item.
Text Variable Type Ctrl + 3 + 3 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Text Variable type to an answer item.
Integer Type Ctrl + 4 + 4 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Integer type to an answer item.
Integer Open Type Ctrl + 5 + 5 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Integer Open type to an answer item.
Analog Type Ctrl + 6 + 6 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Analog type to an answer item.
Real Type Ctrl + 7 + 7 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Real type to an answer item.
Real Open Type Ctrl + 8 + 8 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Real Open type to an answer item.
Constant Sum Type Ctrl + 9 + 9 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Constant Sum type to an answer item.
Sum Less Type Ctrl + 0 + 0 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Sum Less type to an answer item.
Sum Greater Type Ctrl + Shift + 0 + Shift + 0 From the Answer Editing window, applies the Sum Greater type to an answer item.
General Shortcuts (Not Under a Specific Menu)
Get Select Frame(s); G Select Frame(s); G Saves the location and size of the selected frame(s).
Position Frames Select Frame(s); P Select Frame(s); P Applies the horizontal and vertical location of the frame(s) selected with the Get function to the frame(s) selected with this function.
Size Frames Select Frame(s); S Select Frame(s); S Applies the size of the frame(s) selected with the Get function to the frame(s) selected with this function.
Horizontally Position Frames Select Frame(s); H Select Frame(s); H Applies the horizontal position of the frame(s) selected with the Get function to the frame(s) selected with this function.
Vertically Position Frames Select Frame(s); V Select Frame(s); V Applies the vertical position of the frame(s) selected with the Get function to the frame(s) selected with this function.
Size Answer Items C; Select Answer Item C; Select Answer Item Applies the size of the selected answer item to the other answer items in the set.

Within an answer set, horizontally aligns the answer items that follow the selected answer item.
Horizontally Position Answer Items X; Select Answer Item X; Select Answer Item Applies the horizontal position of the selected answer item to the other answer items in the set.
Vertical Align Answer Items Hold Ctrl + Shift; Select Answer Item Hold + Shift; Select Answer Item> Within an answer set, vertically aligns the answer items that follow the selected answer item.
Vertically Position Answer Items Z; Select Answer Item Z; Select Answer Item Applies the vertical position of the selected answer item to the other answer items in the set.
