Importing and Exporting Questionnaires

Importing Triple-s XML Questionnaires | Exporting Questionnaires

The following sections provide information about importing and exporting various questionnaire formats to and from AskAnywhere.

AskAnywhere enables you to import, and subsequently view, draft answer sets created with other survey systems using the triple-s XML standard format. The triple-s XML format is a standard that defines the means by which both survey data and variables may be transferred between different survey programs running on different software and hardware platforms. Triple-s XML is a language for describing survey metadata – that is, data about the survey data: question labels and response texts, the location of individual data items within the record, valid ranges for responses, etc. For more information about triple-s XML, refer to their web site at http://www.triple-s.org.

AskAnywhere also enables you to export questionnaires using two different text formats and the triple-s XML format. The ability to export questionnaires enables you to share information with colleagues across the country or around the world. For example, during development of a questionnaire, you may want to collaborate with individuals who do not have the AskAnywhere software. Exporting your AskAnywhere questionnaires and then sending those individuals the resulting text files can assist you in that collaboration.

Note: The data saved by the AskAnywhere Administrator is free-floating and contains XML-like tags to label every answer. Because the triple-s XML format can only handle fixed format data, you cannot use this format to exchange data for data analysis. AskAnywhere includes the triple-s XML format to enable you to exchange information about answer sets (e.g., to use the answer set from another survey system as a starting point for creating a similar answer set within AskAnywhere).

In addition, AskAnywhere enables you to export an SPSS command file describing the questionnaire. You can use this file when SPSS is employed to analyze AskAnywhere survey data. The file exported from the AskAnywhere Editor contains information to fully label the corresponding tab-delimited data file downloaded via the AskAnywhere Administrator. For more information about SPSS, refer to their web site at http://www.spss.com.
