Randomizing Questionnaire Elements

The following sections provide information about displaying item numbers throughout a questionnaire; adding, moving, and deleting questionnaire pages; saving and inserting questionnaire pages in other questionnaire; and randomizing questionnaire pages.

Displaying Item Numbers

Item numbers uniquely identify each question and multimedia frame on a questionnaire page and each answer frame within a questionnaire. These items numbers enable you to more easily track and manipulate items within a questionnaire (e.g., in skip and filter instructions and adaptive tags).

Notes:

  • For question frames, the item number indicates the order in which each question frame was added to the current page. Question frames are numbered independently from multimedia and answer frames.
  • For multimedia frames, the item number indicates the order in which each multimedia frame was added to the current page. Multimedia frames are numbered independently from question and answer frames.
  • For answer frames, the first part of the item number indicates the order in which each answer frame will be presented to respondents if no randomization or skip and filter instructions are specified. The first part of the item number is determined by the order in which that answer frame was added to the current page as well as that page's order in the questionnaire. The second part of the item number indicates the order in which each answer frame was added to the current page. Answer frames are numbered independently from question and multimedia frames.
  • The system automatically updates the sequence of items numbers as pages and individual frames are added and deleted from a questionnaire. For example, when you add an answer frame to a page, the numbers are updated sequentially to indicate their absolute position within the questionnaire (first part of the number) and the order in which they were added to the page (second part of the number). The physical location that an item holds on the page (e.g., upper left corner, bottom right corner, etc.) is immaterial to its numbering.

To display item numbers for all the elements in a questionnaire, complete the following steps.

Select graphic to view a larger image.
  1. Select Show Item Number from the Utilities pull-down menu or select Ctrl + I.

Note: Selecting Show Item Number from the Utilities pull-down menu or Ctrl + I acts as a toggle to turn items numbers on and off through out the questionnaire. If there is a check mark next to the Show Item Number menu item, this feature is turned on. No check mark indicates that this feature is turned off.

  2. Select graphic to view a larger image.

  3. Once you have selected Show Item Number, item numbers appear in red in the upper right corner of each element frame throughout the questionnaire.

Randomizing Questionnaire Elements

AskAnywhere enables you to create questionnaires with random presentation of pages within the questionnaire. It enables you to randomize individual pages as well as blocks of pages.

Note: AskAnywhere does not automatically update randomization instructions when you delete or add pages to a questionnaire. Therefore, we recommend that you set up randomization instructions as one of the last steps in the final preparation of your questionnaire. Also, please be sure to check the accuracy of your randomization instructions before you distribute your questionnaire.

To randomize questionnaire pages, complete the following steps.

Select graphic to view a larger image.
  1. Select Randomize Pages from the Utilities menu or select Ctrl + R.
  2. The Randomization window opens.
Select graphic to view a larger image.
    • To randomize individual questionnaire pages, complete the following steps.
      • Under the Start column, enter the page number on which you would like to begin the random presentation of individual questionnaire pages.
      • Under the End column, enter the page number on which you would like to finish the random presentation of individual questionnaire pages.
      • Select the button under the Randomize column to toggle the random presentation of the corresponding individual questionnaire page on (Yes) and off (No).
      • On the following rows, continue entering randomization instructions, as desired.
    • Select graphic to view a larger image.

    • To randomize blocks of questions (as opposed to randomizing individual questions), complete the following steps.
      • Under the Start column, enter the page number that you would like to identify as the beginning of a randomization block.
      • Under the End column, enter the page number that you would like to identify as the end of a randomization block.
      • Select the button under the Randomize column to toggle the random presentation of the corresponding individual questionnaire pages on (Yes) and off (No).
      • Under the Grouping column, enter a number identifying the grouping for this block of questionnaire pages. Enter the same number under the Grouping column for the other block(s) of pages you want to present randomly with this block of pages.
      • On the following rows, continue entering randomization instructions, as desired.

In the example graphic shown, pages 2 through 4 and pages 10 through 14 have been assigned to Grouping 1 while pages 19 through 22 and pages 23 through 27 have been assigned to Grouping 2. Given these randomization conditions, the first and third blocks of pages will be randomly rotated with each other and the fifth and sixth blocks of pages will be randomly rotated with each other. Thus one respondent might see pages 2 through 4 first while another respondent might see pages 10 through 14 first. Additionally, because Yes is selected under the Randomize column for pages 2 through 4, 15 through 18, and 23 through 27, these individual pages will also be randomly presented within their respective block of pages.

    • To cancel the randomization changes you made and close the Randomization window, select Cancel. To save the current randomization instructions, select Ok.
