Implementing the Server Component

  1. If you haven’t already done so, start Tomcat using the startup script provided by the Tomcat installation and verify that Tomcat is running correctly by opening your browser and going to http://localhost:8080. You should see the default Tomcat home page and be able to test some of the servlet examples.
  2. Using your browser, go to http://localhost:8080/askanywhere/servlet/askanywhere.conf.  The AskAnywhere Administrator opens.
  3. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  4. To access the AskAnywhere Administrator for the first time, enter manager in the User Name field, enter askanywhere in the Password field, and select Log In.  Note: The user name and password are case sensitive.
  5. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  6. Select the Access tab.
  7. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  8. Create a new administrative user by selecting Add User.
  9. Click here to view a detailed graphic.

  10. Enter a user name (alpha-numeric) and password (alpha-numeric) of your choice, re-enter the password, select the Administrative User box, and select Save.

Note:  Any user defined as an administrative user will have access to all administrative functions.  Any user not defined as an administrative user will have access only to the Projects and Analysis tabs.

Caution:  Make sure that your first user is defined as an administrative user because after you set up your first user, the "manager" and "askanywhere" user name and password are no longer valid.  In addition, be certain that you always maintain at least one administrative user or you will no longer have access to the administrative functions.

  12. In order to limit the computers that can access the AskAnywhere Administrator, enter the IP address(es) to which you want to grant access in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field and select Save.  Note:  We recommend that you enter at least one IP address in this field; otherwise, any machine will have access to the AskAnywhere Administrator.
    • To grant access to a single machine, enter that machine’s IP address in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field.  (For example, to enable access for the machnine with an IP address of 1.1.1.1, enter 1.1.1.1.)
    • To grant access to several computers with similar IP addresses, enter the common part of the IP address in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field.  (For example, to enable access to any machine with an IP address that begins with 1.1.1, enter 1.1.1.)
    • To grant access to several machines with different IP addresses, enter the IP address of the first machine, press Enter, enter the next IP address, and press Enter.  Continue until you are done entering all the desired IP addresses.

Caution:  Entering data in the IP Address Allowed to Connect to AskAnywhere Administrator field restricts remote access to the AskAnywhere Administrator.  If at a later date, you want to access the AskAnywhere Administrator from a new IP address (e.g., while you are traveling), you must first add the new IP address from a machine with access permission.

Note:  If at anytime you lose your Administrative User access (e.g., forgotten password, data loss), you can revert to the "manager" and "askanywhere" user name and password in one of two ways.

    • Delete the askanywhere.cfg file.  Caution:  This will delete all settings in the AskAnywhere Administrator.
    • Edit the askanywhere.cfg file (using a plain text editor) by deleting all of the <user …/> tags. Then restart AskAnywhere or Tomcat.
