Bowling Green, Ohio, September 15, 1999 - Senecio Software, Inc. announced today that it has received, in conjunction with Medical Decision Logic, Inc. (www.md-logic.com), a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (DA12307-01A1: "Web-Based Client-Server Alcohol and Drug Assessment") to research, design, and test computer automated schedules for clinical assessment in neuropsychiatry.

Medical Decision Logic, Inc., the primary contractor, has sub-contracted with Senecio Software, Inc. to develop JAVA applets for Phase 1 of Medical Decision Logic's JAVA SCAN project - Web-based Client-Server Alcohol Abuse Assessment. This initial phase of the JAVA SCAN project will automate Sections 11, "Use of Alcohol," and 12, "Use of Psychoactive Substances other than Alcohol," of the World Health Organization Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN version 2.1).

Jerry Wicks, President of Senecio Software, explains that "such a system not only makes the deployment of alcohol and drug assessments instruments easier but the use of JAVA also makes the client application largely platform independent, thereby allowing this new system to run easily on virtually any computer." Moreover, Wicks notes, "as an intranet application at either a clinical or research site, data management will be more secure, reliable, and efficient. Thus, web-based computerization of the clinical assessment of drug and alcohol abuse has the potential to improve mental health services by fostering efficient standardization of assessment."
