Senecio Software and DNAPrint Genomics receive NIH research grant

National Institute on Aging awards $101,000 to extend genomic-based ancestry test to social, demographic and health care research

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio & SARASOTA, Florida ?January 31, 2005 ?Senecio Software Inc and DNAPrint genomics (OTCBB: "DNAP") announce today the receipt of a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research award from the National Institute on Aging. The grant supports the design and feasibility testing of a system extending the use of DNAPrint genomics' ANCESTRYbyDNA product to include social, demographic and health care research.

The need within American society for new research on the topic of race is large and growing. And the need among demographers and other social and health scientists for additional research tools allowing them to carefully explore the social and cultural elements surrounding racial identities is equally great. The recent directive by the federal Office of Management and Budget requiring the option of multiracial classification on federal forms; the growing racial and ethnic diversity within American society, coupled with the knowledge that racial identities can vary depending on measure, context, and cultural factors, are evidence of the need for additional tools to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the shaping of racial identities.

According to Dr. Jerry Wicks, the project's Principle Investigator (PI) and President of Senecio Software, "since race is obviously a social construct, we do not consider this DNA test to be a measure of race, nor are we proposing it replace the widely accepted self-report, parental, and observational measures commonly used in surveys or collected on administrative records. Rather, we see this innovative tool being added to the set of measures available to scientists allowing for an elaboration of race-related research. The culmination of this project will provide social scientists with an important new variable to include in their studies of race."

As further explained by Dr. Wicks, "there is also a huge unmet need within the health care sciences, medicine and pharmacology for precise and objective measures of bio-geographical ancestry. Just about everyday we learn of a new medical study reporting significant differentials in pharmacological effects on people with different ancestral backgrounds. This research project should make it easier for DNAPrint's genomic-based test to be incorporated into more NIH funded biomedical research studies."

DNAPrint's innovative genetic testing technology (Ancestrybydna 2.5, DNAWITNESS 2.5, EURODNA 1.0, EUROWITNESS 1.0) is the first to offer an objective and quantitative measurement of continental and/or ethno-geographic ancestry admixture.

Target markets for the software system under development through this SBIR grant award include federal and state funded scientific research including the social, demographic, behavioral, health, biomedical and pharmacological sciences.
