Bowling Green, Ohio, July, 1, 2001 - Senecio Software, Inc. announced today that it has received, in conjunction with Medical Decision Logic, Inc. (www.md-logic.com), a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health (Patterns of Intimidation: The Role of Social Networks) to research, develop, and test a Internet-based client-server system for detecting the problem of bullying and cruel teasing among 6th, 7th, and 8th grade children in a school setting.
Medical Decision Logic, Inc., the primary contractor, has sub-contracted with Senecio Software, Inc. to develop and write a web-based survey software system that will allow school counselors to gather and analyze data to determine patterns of social networks among school children. Through this data collection and analysis schools hope to identify patterns of friendship networks that will help combat the problems of bullying and cruel teasing among children in school settings.
Research indicates that bullying is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. An estimated 20% of school children in the United States alone are directly involved as either bullies or victims. Moreover, a much larger percentage of children have indirect involvement as bystanders who witness the viciousness of bullying and too often see such bullying actions continue with little or no intervention.
Dr. Jerry Wicks, President of Senecio Software, feels that "developing this web-based survey system will help school administrators and teachers combat problems that have, in the past, often lead to tragic results, including fatal violence against fellow students and teachers." Thus, through their partnership with Medical Decision Logic, Inc., Senecio hopes to develop a system that will support three levels of intervention: 1) developing individual "treatment" by counselors of identified bullies and victims, 2) using social network parameters to target influential leaders and groups involved in bullying, as well as potential victims, and 3) determining universal preventative interventions
